Description:
A gentle journey into mindful creativity through Japanese-inspired watercolour painting.
Course Content:
Week 1 – Introduction to Mindful Art
- Simple brush exercises: connecting breath with movement
Week 2 – The Art of “Ma” (間) – The Beauty of Space
- Introduction to the Japanese concept of Ma (meaningful space)
- Practice: minimalist ink compositions with conscious spacing
- Meditation on stillness and presence
Week 3 – The Way of the Brush
- Brush handling techniques (pressure, flow, rhythm)
- One-stroke exercises: bamboo, plum blossom
- Meditative line work
Week 4 – Observing Nature: Leaves, Stones, Flowers
- Mindful observation walk or object study
- Nature sketching with a calm, non-judgmental mindset
- Light wash techniques in watercolour
Week 5 – Colour & Emotion
- Exploring colours as emotional expressions
- Creating a personal colour palette
- Abstract watercolour painting based on feelings
Week 6 – Traditional Japanese Motifs
- Introduction to classical Nihonga motifs (mountains, waves, birds, plants)
- Guided painting of one motif
- Focus: precision with softness
Week 7 – Seasons of the Self Reflecting on personal “inner season” (spring = growth, autumn = letting go, etc.)
- Painting symbolic imagery
- Journaling and quiet sharing
- Week 8 – Ink and Silence
- Sumi ink meditation
- Exploring black, grey, and the subtle power of tone
- Silent painting session
Week 9 – My Inner Landscape
- Creating a personal landscape using Japanese compositional principles
- Combining memory, mood, and natural imagery
- Layered watercolour and ink work
- Week 10 – Integration and Final Sharing
- Completion of final artwork
- Group reflection and discussion
- Optional mini exhibition or silent gallery walk
Fee:
€150 (The materials fee will be 30 euros Payable to the Tutor only which will include all materials needed during the course, such as silk, traditional Asian paints, and brushes.)
